Natural Materials

Granite

  • Good Attributes:

    • Durable and scratch-resistant

    • Heat resistant, great for cooking surfaces

    • Wide range of colors and patterns

    • Unique, each slab is one-of-a-kind

    • Adds value to your home

  • Considerations:

    • Requires sealing to prevent stains

    • Can be expensive

    • Heavy, may need extra support for installation

    • Can crack if subjected to extreme force

 

Marble

  • Good Attributes:

    • Elegant, classic appearance

    • Naturally cool surface, ideal for baking and pastry work

    • Adds luxury to any space

    • Available in a variety of colors and patterns

  • Considerations:

    • Prone to scratching and staining, especially from acidic substances (like citrus)

    • Requires regular sealing to maintain its look

    • Can be very expensive

    • Softer surface can result in chips or cracks

 

 Quartzite

  • Good Attributes:

    • Extremely durable and hard, more so than granite

    • Heat and scratch resistant

    • Beautiful, with natural veining patterns similar to marble

    • Doesn’t require much maintenance compared to marble

  • Considerations:

    • Can be expensive

    • Requires professional installation due to weight and difficulty to cut

    • Can discolor over time with prolonged exposure to UV light

 

Soapstone

  • Good Attributes:

    • Very heat-resistant

    • Naturally non-porous, making it resistant to staining

  • Considerations:

    • Can scratch and dent more easily than granite or quartz

    • Needs to be oiled regularly to maintain its appearance

Manmade Materials

Quartz (Engineered Stone)

    • Wide range of colors and patterns, including those that mimic natural stone

    • Low maintenance, doesn’t require sealing

    • More affordable than natural stone options

  • Considerations:

    • Not heat-resistant, can be damaged by hot pots and pans

    • Can be scratched by sharp objects like knives

    • Heavier than granite, requiring extra support

    • Limited to the patterns available from manufacturers

 

Concrete

  • Good Attributes:

    • Durable and heat resistant

    • Unique, industrial aesthetic that appeals to modern designs

  • Considerations:

    • Prone to cracking, especially over time with heavy use

    • Heavy, may require additional support

 

Solid Surface (e.g., Corian)

  • Good Attributes:

    • Seamless appearance, no visible seams when installed correctly

    • Non-porous, resistant to stains and bacteria

    • Available in a variety of colors and designs

  • Considerations:

    • Can scratch or scorch easily (e.g., hot pots and knives)

Laminate

  • Good Attributes:

    • Most affordable countertop option

    • Not heat or stain-resistant, can burn or discolor
